The Emerging Artist
At the moment I am trying to figure out the definition of emerging artist which is proving far more difficult than I would have thought. There are literally hundreds of definitions of an emerging artist many of which seem to be tailored to specific circumstances or events. After doing extensive research I am still undecided as to whether the definition of an emerging artist should be related to age, length of career, commercial success or the period of time after having finished formal artist training. Of anyone has any opinions or thoughts on the subject let me know…

It has nothing to do with age…I think it’s when someone decides art is their life. That’s what they do 24/7. When there’s no “day job”.

to me, emerging artist always implied that the artist is a professional artist who has found his/her way into the investing art world, but is not yet so well known to be “old news” there…then again, it is a term that has been overused for so many different situations that it has lost relevance for any of them.
Any artist worth his/her salt should be emerging constantly – to remain stagnant is the kiss of certain decay of the artist’s career…

Can the term “Emerging Artist” be more rightly defined as an artist who, like myself, is constantly updating his/her online galleries as in, “E-commerce”, “E-Trading”, “E-merging Artist”? It seems that submitting your work to online E-Galleries is the only form of substantive exposure available to some artists, other than the more groundroots avenue like starting a Meetup.com group. I agree with both Edith and Conni, but would add that an emerging artist is one who still carries the burden of a day job. When the monies garnered from art sales nets the artist the blissful moment of total expressive freedom, morning, noon and night without the fear of “bossey-pooh” looking over your shoulder to catch you doodling. By the way, Nick, I truly enjoy your blog. Good Luck!

Edith i think thats rubbish no “day job”????
A real artist is someone that knows they have to work and STILL chooses art as something they are.
The only kind of person that can actually do art 24/7 is a mentally unstable person or one with rich parents!

After many years I have come to the conclusion that I think we as Artist should leave it out of our vocabulary–We are artist, we are not emerging. One thinks of emerging as someone that is not in a gallery–that does not mean that the rest or us are not artist. As far as Carly, saying rich parents–I will add or rich husbands–I was in that boat until rhe real estate crunch but you can bet your boots just because I am going back into the teaching field I will not develop maybe some of my best work, and maybe get on with getting my art marketed or starting my own gallery like the artist do in Amsterdam but of course, they receive a salary from their art loving government.

Hmmm, so glad to find this. I googled the definition of emerging and established only to still be confused about where the heck I fit in. I’ve been “accepted” to do a solo exhibit at a smaller towns arts centre next year. However they are labeling the artists that show in this particular gallery the “emerging” artist gallery. I have 20 year career in painting behind me though for 10 of it I had a decorative painting business that did not allow me to paint full time (on canvases). Now, almost 40 I am painting a lot more, closed my business to focus on my paintings and do have my first one woman gallery exhibit in Chicago this summer. One woman being key here because I have an extensive resume of group exhibits in a gallery. So does that make me emerging or established? Does it even matter?
