    The Emerging Artist

At the moment I am trying to figure out the definition of emerging artist which is proving far more difficult than I would have thought. There are literally hundreds of definitions of an emerging artist many of which seem to be tailored to specific circumstances or events. After doing extensive research I am still undecided as to whether the definition of an emerging artist should be related to age, length of career, commercial success or the period of time after having finished formal artist training. Of anyone has any opinions or thoughts on the subject let me know…

It has nothing to do with age…I think it’s when someone decides art is their life. That’s what they do 24/7. When there’s no “day job”.

to me, emerging artist always implied that the artist is a professional artist who has found his/her way into the investing art world, but is not yet so well known to be “old news” there…then again, it is a term that has been overused for so many different situations that it has lost relevance for any of them.
Any artist worth his/her salt should be emerging constantly - to remain stagnant is the kiss of certain decay of the artist’s career…

Can the term “Emerging Artist” be more rightly defined as an artist who, like myself, is constantly updating his/her online galleries as in, “E-commerce”, “E-Trading”, “E-merging Artist”? It seems that submitting your work to online E-Galleries is the only form of substantive exposure available to some artists, other than the more groundroots avenue like starting a Meetup.com group. I agree with both Edith and Conni, but would add that an emerging artist is one who still carries the burden of a day job. When the monies garnered from art sales nets the artist the blissful moment of total expressive freedom, morning, noon and night without the fear of “bossey-pooh” looking over your shoulder to catch you doodling. By the way, Nick, I truly enjoy your blog. Good Luck!

Edith i think thats rubbish no “day job”????

A real artist is someone that knows they have to work and STILL chooses art as something they are.

The only kind of person that can actually do art 24/7 is a mentally unstable person or one with rich parents!
